An Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, co-hosted by the Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore, and chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, will take place on 22 and 23 March in Dublin Castle. Representatives from the EU Commission and the European Parliament will also participate in the meeting.
The meeting, known as the “Gymnich” - named after the castle in Germany where the first meeting was held during the German Presidency of the EU Council in 1974 - is informal and as such no Conclusions are adopted. This facilitates an open discussion amongst Foreign Ministers on current and long term strategic foreign policy issues.
Discussions amongst Foreign Ministers in Dublin are expected to focus on:
- The Review of the EU External Action Service following its first two years in operation
- How the EU can enhance its Partnerships with Regional Organisations
Ministers may also address some immediate foreign policy challenges facing the EU. Syria is likely to be discussed following the conclusions of the European Council on 15 March.
